STATE CHAMPS: GOLDEN GOAL LEADS JAYS TO STATE TITLE
It took longer than the Jays would have hoped - both in terms of a title drought dating back to 2018 and in a double-overtime match - but the Jesuit Soccer team claimed the Division I state title with a golden goal by junior Donnie Dovie, assisted by Bryce Barrere. The 1-0 victory over Catholic High of Baton Rouge marked Jesuit's first championship since 2018. Senior goalkeeper Larson Klibert's outstanding performance earned him player-of-the-game honors, crucial in preserving the shutout. Coach Hubie Collins was quick to praise the stellar defense, opportunistic offense, and the raucous support of the Gizzard for the victory.
THROW ME SOMETHING MISTER: JAYS HOLD DRIVE TO RECYCLE BEADS FOR ST. MICHAEL’S
Though Lent is upon and Mardi Gras is well into the rearview that does not mean its time to completely forget about those throws collected during the festive season. Jesuit High School is collecting Mardi Gras beads to donate for recycling at St. Michael School. Adult clients at St. Michael’s Joy Activity Center sort and prepare beads for resale. Donations can be dropped off at the Jesuit switchboard or in the designated bin outside the library. The collection runs from February 15 to March 8.
LET’S PLAY BALL: BLUE JAY BASEBALL IS BACK ON THE DIAMOND
Despite being displaced this season as John Ryan Stadium is being refurbished, the Blue Jay baseball team is back in action. The team is looking to capitalize on the momentum from last year’s state championship title for another run at the top spot. The Jays currently sit at 3-3 with victories against Terrebone (12-0), Lakeshore (3-1), and Archbishop Shaw (11-6). Their first district contest will take place during exam week with a series against St. Augustine starting on March 12th.
GENERATIONS OF LOVE: JESUIT CELEBRATES GRANDPARENTS
On February, Jesuit High School hosted its annual Grandparents’ Day Mass, which invites grandparents and their grandsons for a special celebration in the Chapel of the North American Martyrs. Seniors Harrison Harley and Tucker Schibler each addressed the gathered crowd, recounting stories of their grandparents and thanking them for their guidance and love throughout the years. Following Mass, a light reception was held in the Student Commons.
FASTING FRIDAYS: CAMPUS MINISTRY PROVIDES BREAD “FEAST”
Each Friday during Lent, the Campus Ministry Office is home to “Fasting Fridays” where students are invited to donate any amount of money towards the Mission Drive in exchange for a “feast” of three pieces of bread. The event touches on the Lenten practices of fasting and almsgiving. Students participating in “Fasting Fridays” are asked not to eat anything else throughout the day at Jesuit except for the bread the receive at lunch, thus foregoing any snacks at ten minute break or off periods. Instead, they offer up their hunger in solidarity with the poor who do not have enough to eat. This year, the Mission Drive will benefit the Jesuit mission and people of Kyrgyzstan.
