Hello, fellow Jays! I’m Grant Carroll, and I’m excited to kick off my second year as Editor-in-Chief of The Blue Jay. We’ve got big news: the newspaper is changing its look. Instead of the traditional tabloid style, we’re moving to a magazine format.
This change is really a return to our roots. The Blue Jay began its modern era when the school opened its doors on Carrollton and Banks. From 1927 to 2025, the student produced paper has been a staple of life at Jesuit. Over the years, The Blue Jay has gone through format changes, sometimes because of outside factors like paper availability or printing costs. But through it all, the heart of The Blue Jay has remained the same. Generations of students have read its pages to see the big stories on campus—whether it’s about sports, student life, or our teachers. Longtime favorites like “Blue Jay of the Month” and “Teacher Feature” will still be here, but the new format gives us even more room to grow.
The magazine style will give us some clear advantages. First, the new format is smaller and easier to slip into a backpack. It’s a simple detail, but we hope it encourages more Jays to read—and to hang on to—their copy of The Blue Jay. Second, we can write longer and more detailed stories. Third, each issue will give a full look at the whole quarter—season recaps for sports teams, reviews of Student Council events, and even longer reviews of music, games, or restaurants. Think of it as the “big picture” of Jesuit life.

At the same time, our website—thebluejay.news—will handle quick updates. Sports scores, events happening this week, and breaking news will all be there. If you want to know what’s going on right now, that’s the place to go. And if you subscribe, you’ll get your copy of the magazine delivered straight to you. Otherwise, you’ll be stuck battling the crowd for one of the extras.
The goal is to have up-to-date coverage of all things Jesuit on the website as soon as possible. Without having to worry about the time involved in sending the paper to the printer and waiting for it to be delivered, The Blue Jay website will allow us to report on games, events, and student life as it happens, live and late-breaking. Be sure to make thebluejay.news your first click in the student portal each morning.
And if you want to do more than just read The Blue Jay, we’d love to have you on staff. We need writers, photographers, cartoonists, and students interested in layout and graphic design to help bring each issue to life. There really isn’t a better time to join The Blue Jay than right now with all the opportunities this new focus will bring. So if you want to be on the sidelines taking photos or behind the desk making gameday graphics, The Blue Jay has a spot for you.

This change is also part of something even bigger. The Blue Jay isn’t just changing physical formats—it’s becoming the home for all student media at Jesuit. The Jesuit Student Life YouTube channel is being renamed The Blue Jay, so whether you’re flipping through the printed pages or watching highlights on the big screen, it’s all connected. From articles to videos, from photography to podcasts, everything will now live under The Blue Jay umbrella. It’s one name, one place, and all of it created by students for students.
But most of all, this new format is committed to keeping The Blue Jay what it has always been: student-driven, student-written, and made for the Jays. The size and look might be different, but the focus is the same.
So subscribe, stay connected, and help us keep this tradition alive. The Blue Jay has been telling Jesuit’s story for 100 years—and now it’s our turn to carry it forward.
