MAO Making Moves: Hosts First Ever Tournament
Jesuit's chapter of Mu Alpha Theta hosts inaugural tournament at Carrollton and Banks.
Jesuit High School recently made history by hosting its first-ever Mu Alpha Theta tournament, drawing an impressive turnout of 255 students from 15 schools. Mu Alpha Theta, which is a national high school and junior college honorary mathematics club, focuses on its two goals of challenging academically talented students through competitions and fostering a communal interest in mathematics. To this end, Jesuit’s chapter of Mu Alpha Theta sought to bring together the local area “mathletes” to Carrollton and Banks for a morning of mathematical matchups.
Despite being the host, Jesuit students did not compete, but played a crucial role in facilitating the operation of the tournament. Notably, the success of the tournament wouldn't have been possible without the dedication of Jesuit's own students. Before and during the event, numerous students worked tirelessly to ensure its smooth execution. From setting up classrooms to collecting tests and providing directions, their invaluable contributions underscored Jesuit's commitment to excellence in every endeavor. Jesuit's Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) members generously volunteered to assist with parking duties, reflecting the school's ethos of service and teamwork.
The overall reception of the event has been overwhelmingly positive. “It was a great turnout for a first tournament,” said Ms. Kelly Lulich, one of the moderators of Jesuit’s MAO chapter, “I have gotten a lot of positive feedback from the schools that participated and also from the volunteers.”
This will surely not be the last tournament that Jesuit’s MAO chapter will host. In the future, the group hopes to stick to it’s goal to encourage students to learn and work together. As they plan more tournaments, they hope the success of this first one will motivate many more students in the years to come to love math and enjoy competing while showing respect and determination.
