Jays On Top: Basketball Defeats Brother Martin
On Tuesday evening, after a long weekend, the Jays, with the largest crowd at the Benson Arena in the entire season, defeated Brother Martin 48-40 in one of the biggest games of the season. It was hard fought game by both teams, but the Jays came out on top.
The Gizzard was at full force for the “El Switcho” game, in which at halftime each side of the Gizzard ran to the other side. The Gizzard was loud and rowdy and was a great contributor to the Jays success last night.
Jude LaForge led the Jays to victory with a team-leading 17 points and 9 rebounds. Brewer Nitcher also contributed to the Jays success with some key shots and rebounds. The game was a fast-paced defensive battle, and it was one of the most physical games the Jays have played the entire season. Both teams fought til the end and one of the biggest reasons the Jays came out on top was their free throw percentage. Coach Jennings has done a great job in making sure the Jays shoot well at the line and it was one of the keys to victory over their district rival. The Jays never trailed although Brother Martin came close to coming back a handful of times. If the team wants to win the State Championship, they are going to have to fight. The Jays also need to be more aggressive in the fourth quarter since they almost blew a 9 point lead to Brother Martin and lost to St. Augustine after being up 10 going into the fourth. The Jays have a good chance to make a run in the playoffs, and are now tied for first in the Catholic League.
