Grubbin' with Grant: Frey Smoked Meat Co.
Named for its sensational smoked meats, Frey is home to many more treats including tasty burgers and delectable desserts.
In this edition of “Grubbin with Grant”, my family and I took a trip to the heart of Mid-City and devoured some grub at Frey Smoked Meat Co. This was the second time I’ve been, and the first time tickled my tastebuds, so I was excited for my return.
For a starter, we got the pork belly poppers. I’m a huge fan of pork belly and cracklins and such, so when I saw it on the menu, it was a must order item. Usually, pork belly is mainly tender fat; however, these were more actual meat. The star of the show for me was the pepper jelly glaze, which added a nice sweet-and-spicy flavor. While I liked them, they weren’t my favorite pork belly item I’ve had, still something to try, though.
For my main, I got the BBCuban, which, like the name says, is a barbecue Cuban sandwich. To be honest with you, it was not as grubbin’ as I had hoped. The flavors didn’t mesh well, and the sauce was a bit overpowering. It was still good, but I probably wouldn’t order it when I return. I also got a side of cornbread because I remember it was delicious last time.
I was deeply satisfied by this small square of cornbread. It was amazing, rivaling that of the cornbread my granny would make in my youth. The bread was sweet but not like a dessert, and maintained intact throughout the eating process, which is something a lot of other cornbread suffers from.
Of course I also ate off my family’s plates. I tried my dad’s brisket and I wasn’t too happy with it. Like last time I came, it was pretty dry in the middle, but otherwise, that was my only gripe. My mom’s pulled pork sandwich was a valid option. It was a nice combination of flavors with the onion and barbecue sauce.
Overall I’m satisfied with my Frey’s experience, however, I’m not gonna say it’s better than Blue Oak. I’m still gonna go there from time to time though and I think your family should too.
