Grubbin' with Grant: A Visit to Mister Oso
Grant checks out latest taco spot to hit the streets of Uptown New Orleans.
Today, I’m taking my tastebuds to Mister Oso. It’s a hip new taco spot that’s located in the heart of New Orleans on Tchoupitoulas. Father Polce, S.J. recommended this spot to me, so a big thanks goes to him.
Firstly, the atmosphere is amazing. The neon lights and exotic wallpaper are complimented by the Latin-American jams in the background. The service was great and the food was delivered almost immediately.
We ordered the coconut rice (which got a Michelin shout out), the empanadas, the mojo pork tacos, and the smoked shrimp tacos. I was absolutely blown away by the empanadas. The pastry was so light, crunchy, and warm. It was filled with barbecue chicken, mozzarella, avocado poblana crema, and lime. The sauce was nice and tangy, and the smokey inside had perfect compatibility.
The coconut rice was there as a palate cleanser and a much needed spice reducer. Despite it’s functional success, I have to say, I was ultimately disappointed bythe grain dish. There was little to no coconut flavor and there was nothing on the plate spicy enough to need to drown it with rice.
The tacos were served family style with pork fat fried tortillas. The pork left something to be desired but still perked my buds. The shrimp had a great Smokey citrusy flavor.
After a very satisfactory main course, we were delighted to receive our dessert, the “Pro Move”. Creole cream cheese ice cream with crumbled cornflakes alongside a long churro dusted with cinnamon sugar. This was definitely the star of the show in my opinion.
The ice cream had an amazing cheese cake taste with a slight hint of mango. The churro was out of this world. Thin, crunchy, and absolutely devious with the cinnamon sugar and caramel sauce.
All in all, I’m very thankful for Fr. Polce for recommending this joint. Mr. Oso has a couple other locations in the Colorado area and has only been opened here for a month. I gotta pass on the message and tell all my fellow Jays to check this place out. Grubbin’ Approved.
