There are those athletes that compete in arenas and stadiums. There are those that travel across the country to showcase their talent. Yes, there are those. Yet there are also others – those that live solely on the fields of Jesuit High School. It is for those lunchtime athletes who are indebted to Coach Derrick Martin, who has reinvigorated the intramural sports program at Jesuit High School this fall. There is little doubt that Coach Martin’s passion provides the spark of joy and excellence at the heart of this program.
The highlight of the intramural season came during the first-ever “Champ Week,” a whole week dedicated to intramural sports. The week began on Monday with “Media Day,” in which the intramural athletes gathered in the Student Commons for a media frenzy of photographers, interviews by the Jesuit news reporters, and autograph sessions requested by their ever-growing fan base. And then, for the Big Game, Coach Derrick emblazoned the familiarly green Will Clark field with a giant blue “J.” Pride for the school was coupled with pride for the nation when the ROTC Color Guard performed the National Anthem before the game.
The games themselves were just as thrilling as the fanfare. In the Freshman/Sophomore division the number one seeded Cole’s Fanny Pack dominated the three seeded Greasy Grippers by a score of 21 to 0.
The Junior division saw the rivalry between Miraflor’s Monsters and 3Peat continue into the championship game. It was close contest but Miraflor’s Monsters pulled away late and sealed the victory with a last second touchdown by junior Caleb Alexis, who “Mossed” every member of 3Peat.
The Senior division was another highly entertaining matchup that saw team “Everett Denny” vs Charlene’s Angels. There were concerns the game might get rained out as early storms wet Will Clark field, but the storms could not dappen the excitement for the game. The sun eventually came out and so did the fans. They were not dissapointed as quarterback Paul Tey and Jack Kessels dueled throughout the first half of lunch. In the end, Charlene’s Angels were able to secure the victory and take home the Intramurall Football Championship title. The following week they were invited to ring the gong at morning assembly - a fitting end to a great season.
Coach Derrick’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. The student body is more hyped than ever to perform as, and cheer on, the intramural athletes.
