Blue Jay of the Month: Luke Couret
Student Body President, Basketball Starter, WJHS Anchor: Luke Couret is a true Renaissance Man
This month’s Blue Jay of the Month is Luke Couret! A lot of people know Luke as the Student Body President this year or the Ninja Turtle guy. Luke has made it one of his top priorities to spread Blue Jay Spirit across the school as much as possible. He has already helped the school have an amazing welcome week, back to school dance, and ring dance for seniors. Luke has many more great plans to make this school year as fun as possible. He is constantly working with student council to come up with fun, new ideas for the student body.
What are your goals this year as Student Body President?
I really want people to enjoy coming to Jesuit every day. I have a lot of ideas to help us get through the tough times in the week, whether by playing music in the commons on Friday, pep rallies, and even the live announcements on WJHS.
In addition to student council, you’re also on the varsity basketball team. How are we looking this year?
We’re missing some key guys from last year, but we have great chemistry and disciplined required to get the job done. We’re fundamentally sound and I think that will takes us a long way.
You are also a champion in another sport. Care to elaborate?
I used to play indoor volleyball and a few years back we won the national championship in Orlando, Florida. We followed it up with a runner-up trophy the next year and me and another teammate went on to take second nationally in beach volleyball.
“Trust the process. Trust Jesuit. Trust God.”
Not only do you play sports but you also help others through sports medicine?
Over the summer I worked at Southshore physical therapy as a PT tech, which means I’m helping ice the patient, show them their exercises. I’ve learned you’ve got to be disciplined and a hard worker, but its definitely rewarding.
What would you say is the most important thing that Jesuit has taught you?
Discipline. There’s rules for everything here: uniform, hair, you name it. However, it’s a skill you will need when you’re older and that we’re learning it now means it will take us far.
I’ve heard you like reading books. What are you currently reading?
Can’t Hurt Me by David Goggins. It’s about his life and how he started from nothing to changing his mindset and working hard. The main thing I took away from it was to not wait and start now to make a change. It’s what motivated me to run for student council president – why wait to make a difference?
Any advice that you would give to the new Blue Jays just starting off their Jesuit careers?
Trust the process. Trust Jesuit. Trust God.
