Back on Top: Wrestling Claims District Title
The Jays are district champions for the first time in over a decade.
The Jesuit wrestling team secured its first district title since 2009 with a dominating performance on the mat against Brother Martin, St. Augustine, and Archbishop Rummel. Behind a total team effort, the Jays were able to down Rummel with a score of 58-20, blank St. Augustine 84-0, and take down Brother Martin 41-32.
The team entered the district duals with an overall record of 10-0 in dual meets and were determined to make it 13-0 by the days end. The Saturday duals began with It all a sea of blue and white flooding Rummel’s gym ready to take their opponents to “deep water” and take the district title. First up was host Archbishop Rummel. Despite two pins from the Rummel team, Jesuit won six of the ten matches to take the victory and moving them to 11-0 on the season. The second dual of the day was against the Purple Knights of St. Augustine. It was a quick one, considering the Knights only had one competitor, and the Jays went to 12-0.
With Holy Cross electing to skip the district duals, the final duel of the day was against the stiffest competition yet in Brother Martin. Despite being the defending district champs, the Crusaders could not keep pace with the Jays. Jesuit took six of the ten matches highlighted by Spencer Lanosga’s quick pin of his his opponent within one minute of the match.
After the match, everyone was filled with joy as they secured their district title with a 13-0 record. Coach Jon Orillion ‘01 said that he is proud of the boys and what they have achieved. He also went on to say that they have checked off a lot of goals that they had for the season. Spencer Lanosga followed his coach’s comment with another goal for the team, that is to win the state title.
The Jays will compete next in Bossier City on February 2-3rd to defend their state title. Any student interested in attending the tournament on the Gizzard Spirit Bus, which includes a limited edition Gizzard t-shirt, should pick up a form from the student council office.
